Navy League Urges Full Funding of Maritime Security Program

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Navy League of the United States in a May 29 letter urged House and Senate lawmakers to restore $20 million to the Maritime Security Program that had been cut by the House Appropriations Committee during its markup of the fiscal 2015 Department of Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies appropriations bill.

In the letter, the nonprofit advocacy organization noted that without the full $186 million authorized by Congress, the nation will be unable to sustain the 60-ship U.S.-flag maritime security fleet that is necessary to meet the Department of Defense’s current and projected sealift requirements.

The Maritime Security Program makes commercial ships and intermodal sealift capability available to the U.S. military in a public-private partnership with the Department of Defense that would cost the department billions to replicate. It is the most cost-effective source of sealift for the U.S. government, and saving $20 billion now will cost the even more during the next crisis after the current pool of mariners and militarily useful vessels shrinks.
